What are you currently working on? Your day-to-day responsibilities?
Trying to get my men's grooming book published and keep a continuous buzz in the industry as a talented make-up artist.
What inspires/motivates you?
My personal accomplishments and the accomplishments of others is the best inspiration and personal motivator for me. As it should be for all, no matter what field you are in.
What are your biggest challenges or the downsides of what you do?
The biggest challenge of a make-up artist today is having the industry respect the art form. The introduction of technology (i.e. Photoshop) is ruining this business.
How do you balance your personal and professional life?
It's not very difficult to balance my personal life and business because they fade into each other. As a freelance make-up artist your schedule changes daily unlike that of an individual that works nine to five.
What career achievement are you most proud of?
My biggest career achievement is to still have a career in an industry that I love.
What was your biggest personal/career mistake and what did you learn from the experience?
My biggest career mistake was thinking talent was enough. I found that out the hard way, as I sat at home waiting for my phone to ring while watching the bills pile up. As a freelancer you are forced to market yourself on a daily basis and walk that fine line between being aggressive and a pain in the ass. Especially now with the market being so flooded.
What's your philosophy on the rates you charge clients?
It is always best to appear flexible with your rate while negotiating with a client. Although it is more than correct to say no thank you to a job, if you feel you are being taken advantage of.
Was there ever a time when you questioned if this was the right thing to do with your life? Or that you might not succeed in what you're doing? Please explain.
I think everyone who earns a living in a non-traditional job questions themselves, especially if you are not one of the chosen few to have what is called an " overnight success." This business is not for the faint at heart, if you do not possess a personal love for what you do, you are destined to fail. If I did not have a deep affection for what I do, I would have left this business a long time ago.
Guiding principles?
Never think you know it all, you can always learn something new.
Birthday? Where you grew up? Where you went to school?
I was born 5/10. I grew up in Newark NJ (Brick City). I went to Dayton Street (Elementary), St. Benedict's & Hillside (High School), and Robert Fiance (Beauty School).

Happy Belated Birthday. Glad to see that someone has considering a grooming book for the Brothas. It's a very much needed idea.

how do you feel about men waxing or threading their eyebrows? Is it becoming common with your clients? Is there something else that you would recommend for a man who has too much eyebrow hair (ie: unibrow)?

Wow. William Marshal is fierce. I respect his vision and committment greatly. We need more brothas like that working it out. I am out here in the freelance biz also. He is so write about it taking a certain kind of person to make it. And since he is an aggressively attractive man, he must do alright. Keep it up!

I commend William for putting up with this flakey industry. Most people don't have the patients to deal with it. His work is amazing and I just want to say, keep up the good work.
