Word To Herbert
I'm giving up French Fries for Lent. Wait a minute ... Lent's already passed, I think. Right? Do I have to wait till next Easter or something? I guess it'd help if I wasn't Jewish. NO! I am giving up French Fries right now. They're nasty, they prolly cause cancer, and they may be the reason why I'm so tired every day after lunch. SO LONG, French Fries. Never again shall I eat you.
Here comes the big test. I'm going to Andy's for lunch. Wish me luck!
YES! Yes indeed, y'all. NO French Fries on my plate, in my belly or anywhere near my person. I went to Andy's, the best diner in NYC, serving delicious food at some seriously amazing prices. My tuna club sandwich came with a fat, juicy, cruncy, salty, delicious side of French Fries, but I told the lady, I said to her, I said "I don't want the French Fries on the side." It didn't even sound like me, yo! It sounded like ... like ... Reagen in the Exorcist, except my demon was some pansy Vegan artist from Chelsea! It was weird! But I said no. And Andy's didn't make it easy. Uh-uh. I tried to substitute it with some mashed potatos, thinking I'd pour on the salt and pepper and dip forkfulls in ketchup and close my eyes and imagine each bite as a juicy French Fry, but no. They wouldn't substitute mashed for fried.
How messed up is that?
So there I was, racking my brain for the right substitution for French Fries, something that might be the next best thing, so I thought ... peas? They're at least crunchy, right? I can pour on the salt and pepper, and they just might not taste so bad with ketchup. (Oh God.) So the waitress went and then came back and said "they don't substitute vegetables." Day-amn. Why they gotta make this hard? What was I to do? I had to think. The waitress said she'd give me a minute and then come back. She scurried off to the next table and took this guy's order. Scrambled eggs with American cheese, turkey sausage, whole wheat toast, coffee, juice and hash browns. Wait a minute ... ... ... hash browns? Yes! THAT'S IT! If mashed taters are in another price bracket, maybe because of the time it takes or the butter and garlic and stuff, then FOR SURE home fries are not and can be switched with the French Fries easy. Home fries are baked, not fried, and they're salty, oily and really good with pepper and ketchup.
Okay.
I called her back over, and with a sly little smile at the corner of my mouth and a vibe like I figured out how to get into the SoHo House, I said "how about home fries?" She smiled back, said let me see. It was in the bag. She comes back, with that same little smile, and I was like "Dang, Herbert. You are one smart dude." Then shesays "Sorry. No. We can't substitute that." NO????????????? Fine! No French Fries. I'll start with a fruit salad and a small bowl of mixed greens, then I'll eat my tuna club and leave.
Upon walking out of Andy's, I felt this void, this missing piece in my heart, and I couldn't figure out what to do. I wasn't tired, stuffed, or anything. Just full. I thought, "this is how people must feel after they eat. Not tired and disgusting, but ... satiated." It sounded like the Chelsea demon was still with me. I got into my car and sped off. I was very confused.
In other news ...
Me and the Mrs. went out on Saturday night on a serious club-hopping quest. We parked our car near the Maritime Hotel, and when we passed, I couldn't help but notice Chateau's butt-kicker, the un-fu*k-wit-able Z was at the door, so I hollered and he gave me the pounds, told the list girl to chek herself, and wifey and I went inside. Hiro has the coolest looking kung fu fight space with an AMAZING sound system, complete with an on-duty sound engineer on the boards. Incredible. Though the DJ was using a laptop, I give him credit for throwing Loose Joints at them weekend warriors, right after "Billie Jean." (As expected, most stopped dancing.) He then saved his arse with the Coolie Skank Riddim, and the morons were back ordering $350 bottles of Grey Goose once again. Wait a go, homie.
(But ... well ... do you have to use a laptop???? Errr.)
From Hiro we went straight to Glo, a Miami-all-the-way club where it really didn't matter what the deejay was playing, it was so fricking packed and loud. We heard the Coolie Skank Riddim again, and we couldn't move, and they were dancing and posing and stuff and doing funny-buy Long Island wife-beater muscle dances, so me and wifey high-tailed it outta there and went to the pool bar at the Hotel Gansevoort. It was pretty ... yuppy, I must say, like being at a place like Continental in Philly, but oh well. This isn't New York after all.
(I swear I heard the Coolie Skank Riddim leaking out of the deck speakers.)
Our next stop was Aer Lounge, and though we didn't intend on stopping there, I couldn't resist when I saw Miguel from Lot 61 doing security and the man, the myth, the legend, Mathias himself, up at the front. Aer was very neat looking inside. It too was pretty packed, weekend crowd. It too was playing the Coolie Skank Riddim. We walked around a bit, checked all the little corners, admired the space, and made our way onto Apt., our final destination. When I walked in, I swear I heard ... was it ... definitely not the Coolie Skank Riddim. It was ... yes ... YES! It was most definitely Colonel Abram's "Music is the Answer," and I looked at my wife and she knew I was thinking "this is where I was trying to be." Apt has a great mixed crowd, mature, attractive, nice, and a little more socially advanced (I guess you can say) then the other spots. Thanks, Qool Marv!!!
My final conclusion is this: No! NYC is not dead. I was wrong. Like London, always creating, always pushing boundaries, NYC has just created its own new dance floor movement. It's called "jukebox style." The DJs don't mix the records, they just take requests and play the songs, no blending, no mixing, no continuity, just a drop from 30 BPMS to 150BPMS. It don't matter. It's so fresh. Continuity is so yesterday! Mixing skill got tired with the trucker hats.
Big up to NYC!
In other news ...
My busted ear drum is not at all busted. Just a nice big clump of unreachable wax resting up on the drum surface, causing discomfort when I'm in the club and the audio waves come beating through. Deejays ... make sure you properly suck your own wax out proper or else you'll have to go to someone who's gonna pick inside where I thought you weren't supposed to pick and it doesn't feel good. Also, in the news, my cousin Nathan, born in Israel, grew up some in France and most in New Jersey, has to go to the French Embassy today. Our government wants him to sign papers saying he will NEVER join the French Army. Of course, the French don't want to lose one of their youngest rising talents (he's quite an Actor, Singer and Poker Player), so they're going to try and brainwash him into NOT signing by forcing him to see a movie and subjecting him to hours on end of Edith Piaf tapes.
I'll keep you updated. Viva la France!! (I ain't signing sh*t).
Love,
Herbert
