Word To Herbert
I can't WAIT for the end of this stinking cold weather. I thought I had it beat, cuz I didn't get sick, but then yesterday I came down with a cold and now I'm just flipping through calendar pages, looking ahead to warmer nights, new DJ weeklies, getting back to the gym and that oh-so-sweet vacation I'm about to embark on with the Mrs. next weekend. A serious Poconos mountain retreat where you gotta go "10 minutes up the mountain" to get cell-phone reception. You know what that means, right? ... ... Ben??? ... ... Marc??? ... ... MOM?????? I will NOT be answering my phone. I'll be chilling in the great outdoors ... watching DVDs and taking long whirlpool baths. We got this "Brookside Cottage" and we just might just never come back.

What's to come back to? Besides FREEDOM? I got another four freaking tickets on the Pontiac (a "failed" meter magically started working again, and while they were there, they did me a favor and wrote me 3 other tickets for registration/inspection related "crimes"), a $450 bill to freaking FRAME some things, a busted computer I'm going to have to replace, an old mixer to replace, new needles to buy, a new cell phone and plan so I never have to hear my friends call me "cheap" again ... ...

Shall I go on?

Let's focus on positive things to get us through these "tryin'" times. Like food. And FREEDOM. First, the food rundown. I don't think I'll ever feel FULL again unless I have a kielbasa from Odessa (Avenue A) with every meal. There's something about the kielbasa ... maybe it's my Eastern European blood, but it's just too damn good. And the burp is essential, but WARNING: Do not belch around other people or anything living for that matter because the odor is truly awful and downright deadly. Francis Poku unfortunately had the distinct pleasure of being locked in the Pontiac, windows down, following one of these catastrophic explosions. Let's put it like this: I never knew a black man could turn pale. He was pale. We looked like brothers in the front seat. Sorry, Francis. Happy birthday again.

Buff Patty on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene is pretty ill, too. I always get the "Stewed Beef" platter, which comes with cabbage salad, a couple sweet plantains, rice and peas. Now the funny thing 'bout the peas? They don't LOOK like peas! They taste like peas, but they look like beans. So I brought my first platter back, thinking they got it messed up. They assured me, after a good few minutes of slow, careful enunciations and even spellings, that I was indeed eating peas. Funny, they sure as heck don't look like peas. So for a while, I thought that maybe Caribbean folk call beans ... peas. And so it was. BUT THEN, after a food shopping last week, I noticed a bright yellow tin can. and on the can it said "Pigeon Peas," and the picture of its contents resembled beans! OHHH! So that's what they are. They're pigeon peas. Okay.

Course ... I could stick to eating their cornmeal porridge. SO GOOD!

Last but not least, a little enterprising lady on Avenue B across from Guernica opened up the "Snack Dragon Taco Shack." She shells out these old school beef tacos by the plateload and I tell you, you won't be able to eat just one. Unless you are violently allergic to beef tacos, and maybe even still you'll force one more taco down your throat with your dying breath (instead of the "Tell my wife that I love her" routine).

Now onto FREEDOM.

This past Friday, it was BANANERS!!!! Another 600 plus people, singing every word of every song, notable heads like Sway from MTV and Rich Nice, not-to-mention the birthday boy Francis Poku and the Soleil Group's Jacques Phillipe. It was nuts, the line was down the block, and we reached capacity at 2 in the AM. WARNING: Get there as early as you can, because all of NYC is trying to join our Freedom family.
