Herbert's Heard
1. "Tiny Dancer" -- Elton John (CBS FM is the best station to paint to.)
2. "Self Destruction" -- I forget. A slew of old school MCs.
3. "Judy Blue Eyes" -- Crosby, Stills & Nash (CBS FM may be the best station.)
4. "Strawberry Fields" -- The Beatles (CBS FM.)
5. "Le Fleur, Le Flah, Le Shkoshkah" -- Heltah Skeltah (I'll still knock you out.)

Word To Herbert
Listen up, kiddies. I'm not even going to pull a "the dog at my Holler" on you this go round. Nah. This one is more like senior year in high school when I told the principal I had a digestive disease and was allowed to miss 1/3 of the year. (That was cool.) The reason I missed last week's Holler is because I've been very busy touching up my new Brooklyn apartment, and I haven't even been able to hook up the computer till about now. Things are slowly getting back on track, and I got 2 weeks of bologna to talk about, so sit back, relax, and enjoy.

Freedom has been a SPECTACULAR success. For the second week 700 people came down in the refrigidist of cold weather conditions, and Cosi and I really ripped it up. The biggest bangers of the evening were (get this): Luniz's "I Got 5 on It" and Michael Jackson's "Pretty Young Thing." When you have 700 people singing "P.Y.T." together, it's a beautiful thing. I thought we mos def did a good thing in moving the party, but then LAST week was even better, and now I'm sure. 800 plus people this time, still freezing freaking cold out, and we heated up they a**es with a few off-the-radar joints that you REALLY haven't heard in a minute and everyone went freaking nuts for them. It's a party-goer's dream come true. And a deejay's as well. Check this email from a new Freedom fan:

-------------------------
Freedom ... is incomparably the most euphoric (non-live band) musical experience i've had every single time i come.... MJ's Off the Wall is my favorite song and I always wait to hear it BUT i gotta say hearing The Bejees' More Than a Woman (another absolute favorite, their's and tavares') just put the entire experience in a whole nother arena for me b/c Off the Wall is expected, More than a Woman/Roxanne is NOT!!! I mean i freakin' lost it!!! ... the fact that i can come in there at a quater after midnight and move my body to everything from Lionel Richie to Fela to Wreckx N Effect until a quater til 5am is better than any high I could imagine! The ONLY downfall is that i had to rub my aching feet on the long subway ride home, but i consider that mere homage to djs of FREEDOM.
-------------------------

Let's add some songs to Freedom's hit list last week: Tears for Fears' "Shout," Tupac's "Do for Love," that 90s conscious hit "Self Destruction," Biggie's "Party and Bullsh*t," Main Source's "Live at the BBQ" (featuring Nas, of course), MJ's "Get on the Floor" and Nina Simone's "See Line Woman," Masters at Work remix. And such a GREAT mix of people from all over--white, black, brown, yellow, red, whatever. Everyone singing and dancing together. Just dope. Just ice.

Holler at me now, come down Friday, and be a part of it all.

Last last Wednesday, Umbrella was killed properly. When I'm there, I kill them suckers, and I get to thug it out like a true Fu-Shnickbert, and they love it. Sometimes the night ends with some blood, and trust me when I tell you that it's the WOMEN that do all the fighting, but all the time everyone leaves saying "dang that blanquito is nasty." The only thing I don't like is the trip up there. Not that it's long, because I love a peaceful drive up the FDR. It was just that my driver kept FALLING ASLEEP. Dude got his swerve on and almost ran some cars off the road! I can't speak Spanish, and he couldn't speak English, so all I could think of to say was "muerte, papi! muerte!" which I thought was "dead" so he'd wake up. It kind of sucked. Don't know how much longer I'll be doing it, though. Gotta make that move, get that paper. Big shout out to DJ Dallas Green who held me down these past couple of Wednesdays so I could continue painting and spackling.

I will truly miss my Dominican brothers and sisters, no doubt. Big big up to Daddy Yankee for coming down and setting the place ablaze, and big big up to Don Omar, Tego Calderon and the other stars of reggaeton for making those crazy records. NOW you MUST read what DJ Obah just put me on to--Tego Calderon's reply regarding an offer to model Sean John clothes:

-------------------------
"I heard about the human rights violations in his clothing factories in Central America. It’s the principle. I don’t think he [Puffy] knows what I am about. Forgive me, but I don’t need Time Square, I don’t need a billboard. I am not trying to conquer white Middle America. I already won the hearts and respect of those I wanted to win - mi gente Latina, my people, the street, my black brothers and sisters. I can’t say in my songs one thing, and then personally be about something else," he said. "Now that someone is offering me some change, I’m going to go against the principles that my viejos (parents) taught me? Nah."
-------------------------

Wow. That was beautiful. I gotta go get me some tissues to dry mine eyes. Be right back. Wait ... I see some spots I missed. Lemme grab the spackle. I love to spackle. I'll spackle whatever. I like saying "spackle."

Okay. Here I am. Man! It seemed that G-d him/her/itself wanted to throw me and the Mrs. off track when he/she/it hit us in the head with a snowstorm the night before we were supposed to move. And then a chest cold which had me weezing with every box, and THEN, on top of all that, the C train--which was one of the draws of this move cuz it's right down the block--is shut down for a reported 5 years (Oh word? And I'm supposed to pay another $1, too? Cool!), and THEN the V train which was filling in for the C train caught on fire, too! Good thing for good friends. They came to my rescue, and all was good. I gotta big them up for all their help.

Big big up to DJ Wicked Wayne, an ill turntablist and hip-hop head till he's dead. Holler at him now cuz he can handle a dance floor: 917.286.0418. Big big up to Jean Pierre Dominique Romain, a true good friend who blew a million dollar deal to help his homie move his ish (in case of time constraints, just call him Dom, or Big Black, or Herb's College Roommate Who Once Got So Drunk He Peed on His Clothes That Were Neatly Folded in His Drawer). Big, big up to the Puerto Rican Shrek, Ben "Aqui" Vasquez, who also designs our tight flyers (aqui4@msn.com). And big, big up to Vincent Pujo, wifey's sister's husband, my brother-in-law (right? that's how that works, yeah?), who came thru and lended an extra hand.

These men are the proud, the few, who have put their lives on the line and stepped up to the 20-hour challenge of moving all of Herbert's records... and all of wifey's clothes!

BK ain't that bad, neither. I mean, they wouldn't let me into the deli the other night, and I had to use the side window like a suspect, but whatever. Suspect is what I am if I'm getting a 16-ounce can of Budweiser at 4:13 in the AM! Dekalb is a funky little strip, but if you're really hungry, forget all those hipper-than-thou spots and hit Andy's Deli. Good turkey sausage, good omelottes and not-bad chocolate-chip pancakes, and CHEAP! Speaking of cheap, I almost cried two weeks ago. I was driving down 9th Avenue, about to pass Port Authority, when out the corner of my eye I saw a beautiful, bright neon sign that said "Pizza Slice ...99 Cents. Oh my G-d!!! Is it true? Is that ... can that be ... Yes! Yes it is! I can see the sign as clear as day. It's shining brighter than Times Square on New Year's Eve. It's flashier, and it's sexy and it sparkles in the dark!

In this great big overpriced block of bustle there STILL exists a 99 cent slice!

Now ... staying in line with being a Cheapbert, if you're ever on Fulton between ... between ... I forget, I'm still new, but if you're ever on Fulton you gotta hit this Muslim eatery that actually has no name. (Great, Herbert. No name, no address. Thanks.) It used to be called "The Blue Nile," and it sits right next to a Muslim prayer hall. Don't let the mess-hall decor distract you from what might be the most fresh, most delicious food bar in all of New York. So good, so fairly priced, I'm in love!

And now that I'm Bob Villabert, I can professionally recommend Sister's Community Hardware on Fulton and ... well ... you know. It's the hot spot for good help, good service, non-commercial prices and good music (they be gettin' down in that place to some serious classics ish). They've helped Cheapbert out of the muddy swamps of do-it-yourself ignorance, and I appreciate that. I've been sweating in this apartment, I tell you, painting and spackling (s-p-a-c-k-l-e) and lifting and moving and mopping and dusting and I'm maybe halfway done at the most. But don't worry ... I'm never too busy for ... THE NEWS!!
