Herbert's Heard
Nothin'. Been too busy with New Year's Eve, the Freedom Party's move, closing on my apartment, and my birthday. Haven't tuned in for a minute. Still singing the Mario song. Really sick of it now.
Word To Herbert
Yeah, yeah yeah. Happy New Year and all that jazz. Don't make much difference to me, you know? Another day, another dollar, another week, another Holler. I don't even remember much of last year, to tell you the truth. Let's see. 2004. Uh ...er ... well. I guess ... okay. I know I ate a lot of nachos this past year, that's for dang sure. I prolly ate more nachos than ever before. Beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, jalapenos for kick, and of course, chicken. San Loco would be my first place winner for their "Macho Nachos" down on Stanton, prolly because you can taste the freshness in each bite. Yeah. And we can't forget Spanish food. I know I must've eaten me enough plates of arroz con pollo to feed a whole project in Washington Heights, and I'm sure I bought 95% of them at that spot in the back of the Blimpie's on 35th between 7th and 8th. Yeah. I'm pretty gangster when it comes to me belly! I also gotta give the coveted "Hamburger Trophy" to L'Express on 20th and Park. It's their lamb burger, and it's the only chuck sandwich Herbert would EVER eat without Heinz 57. So dang good! Like the snack of the year, jalapeno polenta chips (by Good Eats or something) and red chile pepper hummous. DANG! Follow that with an out-of-this-world glass of 8th Continent Choc Soy milk, and you are talking tasty AND healthy.
What else? Let's see. Oh yeah. Music. Freedom hit the top of the party list, and not just because it's mine, but because ... it was just plain dope. AND it was mine. We went from an empty dance floor at Culture Club to 400 plus people at this little unheard-of restaurant on the Lower East Side called Starfoods. We basically showed New York that you could still have the livest party NOT just on a weeknight and you could keep the dance floor packed and NOT have to play 50 Cent or "Lean Back." We saw REAL celebrities like Grand Puba, D-Nice, the UMC's, Lords of the Underground, Dana Dane, Red Alert, and all of you, who in my mind, deserve celebration. Now we're onto our new home, Discotheque, and we've only just begun. But, I do have to be honest and mention a couple other notable events of 2004, so here goes: the Eclectic Ride at Joe's Pub on Tuesday (again), Little Ricky's Rib Shack at Apt on Wednesdays (again), Turntables on the Hudson (again), some cool art gallery party I went to on Broadway, and the MAW Christmas party at Deep.
I think I'll dub Ludacris as my favorite MC, only because the guys cracks me up (I don't even like his music that much). Kanye West put the soul back in hip-hop, so he should get props for that. And comeback of the year has to go to Ja Rule, who managed to get love in the streets with "New York" even after getting completely shi**ed on by 50. Wait ... should I give that award to the M-o-b-b?? "Got It Twisted" was crazy, not to mention the track they did with Alchemist and the one with Lil' Jon. I think we can all safely say "Lean Back" was the #1 single of the year, and the #1 album prolly goes to Usher, who helped push R&B music back into the limelight. (Finishing up with Mario's "Let Me Love You" was a good look too. I think my favorite one just might very well be Anthony Hamilton's "Charlene" or Eric Roberson's "Couldn't Hear Me Over the Music." The best new sound of the year goes to Reggae-ton ("Pobre Diabla" being my most favoritist), though I really liked the uptempo Caribbean explosion with Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On" and Rupee's "Tempted to Touch." The illest reggae riddim was the Coolie Riddim hands down.
AND THE #1 SONG OF THE YEAR GOES TO ... (drum-roll) ... "AS" BY STEVIE WONDER!!! (What'd you think?)
Now. Onto the wack stuff. The most played song lyric of 2004 is "VIP." I'm sorry, but if you say it, you're a cornball. And the worst lyrics might end up in a tie. What was worse? Pharrell's "And think before you fu*k wit little skateboard P" or 50 Cent's "50, uh. Bentley, uh?" The most played fashion accessory is the glorious trucker hat, but the fact that it was still being worn in 2004 is what really gets me. I think it was brought back to life by the whole "metrosexual" thing, which is one of the worst trends I've witnessed to date. Men turning into women, basically. How can you have a penis and spend more time in the bathroom/tanning salon than the girl you're dating? How do women like that sh*t? I'm convinced that the 20-something generation is completely homosexual, which is fine, but have some balls and come out with it. Women checking out bodies and men checking out shoes? What?
What else sucked? George Bush winning the office kind of sucked. New York City definitely sucked more than anyone can remember, which would explain all those Los Angeles people taking over the party scene, with their novel approach to the rock and hip-hop remix called the "mash-up." LA sucks. (SEE the Anthrax vs. Public Enemy single "Fight the Power" or the "Judgement Night" soundtrack.) So does Miami for the most part, except Trick Daddy. He doesn't suck. But Las Vegas sucks. Did you know that Atlantic City and Las Vegas make the same amount of revenue from gaming? And Atlantic City REALLY sucks!! That restaurant Craft ... ... sucked (a little bit of suspense for ya). So overrated it wasn't funny. Go to Mama's in the East Village for the same type of food and spare your wallet (and your taste buds).
Now. What was the greatest thing that happened to me in 2004? The greatest thing that happened to me EVER, in my entire life? Getting the balls to propose to and marry my soul mate, Alexandra. (Racking up the points, fellas. You'll understand.)
Quickly, my resolutions. Don't eat before bed, drink more water, step up my DJ game (website and CDs in early 2005!), be better to my baby, be a little more confident in my decisions, and call my momma more often. There's others, but it's getting late, and Umbrella took the wind out of me tonight. Last but not least, the news. Check out Anthony Mills new album "Cry" at cdbaby.com/cd/anthonymills. And for more info on the kid, go to expage.com/page/musicalwarfare. I do also owe Anthony another big thank you for singing "Ribbon in the Sky" at that restaurant. (She said yes.) Now ... how about Ashlee Simpson getting booed at the USC game? I think she deserves it, but not cuz of her music (which isn't that bad), but cuz she blamed her band for her SNL screw up. Plus, what the fu*k is she doing singing at a football game? What is this world coming to? (The program directors are prolly metrosexual.) And what was her PR agent thinking when he/she told the world that the SNL blunder was due to ... "acid reflux?" Ew!!! You kidding? I didn't need to know that!
BUUUURPPPPPPP! (Gurgle gurgle).
Oh yeah. That just reminded me of another one of my resolutions.
GOOD LUCK IN 2005!!!!
Love, light, wisdom, peace, great health and much happiness,
DJ Herbert
