Word To Herbert
Yeahhhhhh, motherfu**er!!! Ta-dow!!! How'd you like an EARLY Holler, eh? BAM! I'm a break you off so lovely! Lots of big things down the pipe right about now. First off, New Year's Eve. Starfoods is going to host the most talked about New Year's Eve party in HISTORY. My inbox is filling up with ticket requests, and the Great Blue Cosi Cadillac has hit the streets hard, like 3 court summonses deep, pushing tickets like toochis in a jail cell (oh man I'm gonna have to start with those resolutions ASAP). If you want to get your advanced tickets, hit me with your digits NOW, I'll call you, and if any are left, we'll make it happen.
Second, our new home. Discotheque, voted the BEST DANCE CLUB 2004 (Citysearch), is the PERFECT place and Freedom's really going to take it to the next level. This small, intimate dance club on 19th street b/w 5th and 6th avenues has one of the best sound systems in New York, not-to-mention more space to dance and a sexy lounge space in the back room to drink, chill, lie to some girl about what you do or fool some sucker into buying you a drink. It meets everybody's demands. DON'T WORRY ... it's still gonna be cheap, relaxed, casual, fun, and free of the attitude that plagues EVERYWHERE else in NYC. Let me also take a quick second to welcome aboard MIH VENTURES. MIH (Making It Happen, a.k.a. Making It Herbert) has been doing the dang thing for a minute now, and they have the nicest, most beautiful people (in every way) at their events, and they're dying to be a part of our musical movement. We're so happy to have them.
Third, Umbrella has been rocking like crazy. In a few weeks, I'll be sharing the bill with none other than FABULOUS. Big shout out to Nino, Jeffrey, Orlando, Yvonne and the rest of the crew for treating me like family and trusting my skills and believing in my abilities. I've already been blessed to be a part of DADDY YANKEE live, not-to-mention some of the most memorable deejaying experiences to date. Last week, I was doing so good, droppin' em real hot, making people go nuts like I do when I do what I do, I honestly and truthfully thought to myself, "I should do this for a living." Made me laugh!
Onto personal news ...
We've been approved! That's right. Wifey and me, we dun got approved by the co-op board and we're set to close January 6th. BROOKLYN IT IS! Clinton Hill, 11238, the big 718, home of Biggie and Jay, not-to-mention Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, Lenny Kravitz, DJ Van Vader and DJ Obah. Holler at your Herbs. And you know what else? You know what happens on January 4th?
MY MOTHERFU**ING BIRTHDAY!!
That's right, y'all. On January 4th, 1976 (around 7:15 in the AM), in the back room of the maternity ward at Atlantic City Hospital, my moms started yelling and screaming and out came this big-headed monster, already yapping (I was told I didn't cry, but I just started going "yaya" over and over again), covered in gook and juicy gunk.
Thanks, mom. I owe you one.
You know, they never could get me to stop yappin', even when it was time to go to bed. My pops had to put me over his shoulder and dance me to sleep, or else they'd find me jumping up and down on my bed in the middle of the night. Best believe the old man had the ILLEST 8-track tapes anyone could ask for. ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), Styx, Queen, Chicago, the Beatles, Diana Ross ... it was Dance Party USA every night in the Herbert household. Of course, that's where I got my beat. And when the old man got a job running food and beverage at Resorts Casino Hotel, I found a new love for entertainment and the night life and the big stage.
Thanks, dad. I owe you one, too.
Wait a minute ... NO I DON'T. You're in Florida right now, chilling, in 75 degree weather. And I'm up here, freezing my a** off, taking echinacea and Vitamin C and sucking down post nasal drip and putting oscillococcinum under my tongue (whatever that crap is) and feeling like a fat pig, especially when I'm wearing a 400-pound North Face winter coat suffocating me to death, while you're wearing a Noriega button-down with white shorts and brown penny loafers with no socks (you know how they do!). You're playing golf and scheduling jacuzzi time and I'm calling my general practicioner/gastroenterologist and scheduling an appointment for a colonoscopy.
Ah well. I'll be there soon. And I can't wait. (For sunny southern weather, that is. Not the colonoscopy.) And soon, the country will know if we were suckered yet again by the Bushman in this last election. Check out this link and lemme know what you think: blackcommentator.com/119/119_cover_vote_thieves.html. Speaking of which, how about Bowlmor Lanes being funded by Arafat himself? Hahaha. That's interesting. Know what else was interesting? The Masters at Work party Thursday at Deep. I didn't know there was ANYTHING worth writing about in the New York City dance scene, besides Freedom. Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Frankie Feliciano, Victor Duplaix live (good to meet you, homie) and a whole big old room-full of positive, happy people dancing together to some of the best dance music I've heard since ... Freedom. I mean, when a song almost brings you to tears, you know it's so good. Now, if I only knew what song it was (see my song list above).
Big shout out to E Man and Lori (Bang the Party), Maurice from Giant Step records (dude never stops looking 25 years old), Josh Rubin the Corcoran Killer, Robbie, Phil from Dance Tracks, Human, some Freedom regulars, and the rest of the most beautiful people on the planet who came to that party. Also, a big big shout out to MEN'S WEARHOUSE on 6th Avenue. I went in there, looking for dress pants and a couple dress shirts, and not only did I get those things at a great price, but somehow, someway, I EVEN GOT THEM TAILORED in like 15 minutest for $20. I always remembered these things taking a week and like at least $50, but according to the staff over there, they got a back room full of tailors waiting to fix your sh*t. And it's not a sweatshop, either. AMAZING!
I also have to thank my wife and my new parents for a wonderful Christmas weekend in Chicago. I thought the Jew in me would have some coping issues and other deep, internal struggles stemming from my inclusion in the festivities, but after mom-in-law made me carve the Christmas ham on the first night of my arrival, I was okay with whatever. You could've staged a remake of the nativity scene and asked me to play Jesus at that point. (Except I wouldn't sing any carols by the piano. And they didn't have "Dreydel, Dreydel, Dreydel" in the crates, so I didn't end up singing a single tune.) It was a beautiful time with family and friends, and that's what living a spiritual, religious life is truly all about. Check this link out: illwillpress.com/xmess.html (Thanks, DJ JVC.)
I can't help but think about all those families missing their loved ones after what I can only imagine must be one of the most awful things to witness, survive or even hear of. Tsunamis? That's too much. 60,000 people dead and counting. Not a tidal wave, mind you. A tsunami, Japanese (I think) for "killer wave," and it's caused by earthquakes on the ocean floor that cause a ripple at the water's surface--a ripple that travels for miles and increases with intensity till it hits an unsuspecting coastal town and everyone's dead. I mean, EVERYONE. From fisherman and town villagers to surfers and newlywed honeymooning couples on the beach, basking in the sun. A 9.0 ... and if you didn't know, an 8.1 was detected off the coast of Antarctica just days before. That one didn't kill anyone, luckily, but Jesus ... what the heck is going on?
There's a fault line in Harlem???? WHAT??
Pray for the victims, their families, and for all of humankind as we move into 2005. I wish you, your loved ones, your friends, acquaintances and even your enemies (know this) nothing but good health, happiness, fortune, love, light and PEACE.
DJ Herbert
P.S. -- Moment of silence for Reggie White, the "Minister of Defense," one of the reasons the Giants had such a hard time with the Eagles in the 90s.
