What's In Your Deck?

Your Weekly Top 5 Music Picks
I know that ya'll Crusaders are a pretty discerning bunch so I'm excited to see what you're listening too.

I'll start by listing what's in my deck along with a short blurb and a link, if available. Please do the same.

Let's go!

1. Dizzee Rascal--Boy In Da Corner--XL Recordings/Matador
After seeing Dizzee in concert last week I had to dig this one back out and just jam it over and over and over again. I picked up on this one when it was first released in the UK about a year ago (in fact album #2 is about to come out over there) and was just mesmerized by the fact that someone from outside the US had finally taken hip hop, made it theirs and made it work. It's still works and is so far ahead of its time it'll still work next year too. His gritty tales of the street remind me of early 3-6 Mafia without the guns. Just a load of metal bars and knives. Give it a good listen in some headphones one night stoned if you're not quite understanding this one yet. And catch him at SOB's May 5th I believe. I'ma try to be there.

2. The Streets--Fit But You Know It Single--Vice Recordings
I have always listened to hip hop, but like many of you, I also grew up on MTV and one of my favorite videos in the world, back before I sprouted hair anywhere but on my head, was "Our House" by Madness. For some reason this new Streets cut reminds me of Madness and I can't stop rewinding it. Yeah, yeah o.k. maybe I WILL move to London.

3. Jay Z/Dangermouse--The Grey Album
O.K. You've all already downloaded this and by now are sick of hearing people talk about it. But me being a huge fan of all three artists--Jay, Beatles, Dangermouse--I'm still finding subtle little nuances here and there that just draw me in closer and closer to these otherworldly, however familiar, beats. How did he make it work so well?

4. The Beatles--The White Album--EMI
One of the things I liked most about hearing the Grey Album is that it forced me to go dig up my copy of the White Album and give it a new listen. As a young ‘un, my folks loved the Beatles and I only sort of paid attention to them. Then as a teenager I thought I was deep and got into this record a little bit. Now at the ripe old age of 32 I'm really feeling a lot of it right in my heart, especially "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

5. Paul Wall--Chick Magnet--Paid N Full
Some say that Paul could have come better on his solo debut, but honestly my only complaint is that there just might be a few too many guest appearances on here. What can he say though, Paul's a popular guy. He takes the player shit and twists it all up to make it his own. The man has practically developed his own language, which is what I like to hear. Beats by Mo' Betta show the future of Houston.

Remember this is a weekly feature so just your Top 5 choices and save the rest for next week. Now what's in your deck?

You can also listen to what's in Matt Sonzala's deck by checking out Damage Control Radio every Wednesday nite/Thursday morning 12am-3am on 90.1 FM in Houston. Listen to the live stream at kpft.org or kpftx.org.

First off--what is going on Mr. Tamarra? Its been a minute.

Okay...in the deck right now:

1. Nas--Illmatic. I pulled it back out in honor of my copy being on its way from HipHopSite (I wanted the free poster, so I ordered it instead of buying it). One of my favorite albums ever and it improves with each listen.

2. Twista--Kamikaze. Had heard some of these on mixtapes and various other places, but this is his best solo album to date (although Adrenaline Rush has its moments).

3. Kanye--College Dropout. This will come out of the changer soon as its not something I can listen to everyday. That being said, Kanye says things that are a)funny and b)introspective and c)thought-provoking. And the tracks are pretty good, although I think he gave his best beats to other folks.

4. Ethos. Collaborative project from Mic and D of K-Otix, Kay from Example and The Foundation, VG Skillz, Michelle Thibeaux, DJ Cosmos (who produced my favorite cut on the album), D-Rose--I'm forgetting someone I'm sure. Anyway, one of the more complete projects I've listened to in quite awhile.

5. Stat Quo--Mixtape. Not sure exactly what it is, but it has some freestyles and a few studio cuts. At first I didn't see what the hype was about and I'm still not totally sold on him, but the mixtape is pretty good. His voice and delivery are definitely interesting. I'm sure his album will come out at the same time as Helter Skelter, NWA's reunion album, Rakim, and Detox.

I think that's it at the moment...

Frog Eyes-(global symphonic)- Some say it sounds like Bowie, some say Nick Cave, I say it it's incredible. It's dark, it's funny, and it sounds like he is turning into a werewolf while he sings.Good chit mayne.

Black Sheep- A Wolf Sheep's Clothing- This is my "What's Going On." My favorite meal? Anything w/ meat. My favorite quote? Can I have a reciept. My favorite show is Who's The Boss, and my favorite ho...is your's ofcourse.

Trans Am- Liberation- "The Machine has ideas."

TV On The Radio- Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes- It's soul, it's rock, it's electric, it's just fucking good dawg. Star cuts: Ambulance, Wear You Out, You Could Be Love, Dreams

Ginuwine-The Bachelor- If you don't know...you don't understand. Anyway, Timbaland you know he is the man, space age Isley Brothers/Jodeci hybrid. This why Ginuwine is one of my faves, he makes a song about fuckin' with a frog noise in the background, and a beat that could be Three Six Mafia or Bjork.

1- Talib Kweli- the Beautiful struggle- Yes I know piracy is bad, but this album is very good. Just for the Killer Mike and Faith songs alone, I'm copping it.
2- Dani Siciliano- Come as you Are- Kicks Joss Stone's ass on style points alone.
3 & 4 - Marvin Gaye- 15 Greatest hits and What's Going On- The alternate take on "Flying High ...." is a meshing of doo wop and Soul that a lot of cats need to study and really appreciate what inventive overdubs can accomplish.

5- Young Gunz- Tough Love- That Parade joint is incredible.

1. The Walkmen - Bows & Arrows
I absolutely love this cd. They recently played at Fat Cat's and put on an excellent show. Track #2, Rat, The is by far my favorite. Definitely a great band, check them out.

2. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People
I also saw this band recently at the Proletariat, and they were by far the best show I have seen this year. Such great energy. This album is definitely worth the purchase. Some of the vocals are done by members from the band Stars, who I also recommend.

3. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
This band is hott right now! I love this album.

4. Dressy Bessy - Dressy Bessy
This cd is perfect for any time I need some female encouragement. I love the poppy beats and the vocals.

5. Ugly Duckling - Taste the Secret
I love these guys. I am a vegetarian, and everytime I hear the "Meatshake" track, I fuckin laugh my ass off! "Opening Act" is also a great song. I like this album a lot.

{ Wiley :: Treadin' On Thin Ice :: CD // XL }
I know I'm not supposed to have this yet, but fuck it. I reward myself for knowing. If you like Dizzee, you gotta fuck with Wiley. Big up the Eski sound.

{ New Sector Movements :: Turn It Up :: LP // Virgin }
GET THIS FUCKING RECORD RIGHT FUCKING NOW. That's not a request. If you don't get this album, you have no soul. Soulful, forward-thinking, and brilliant. IG is a genius. A versatile genius. Don't make me say it again.

{ Kanye West :: College Dropout :: LP // Roc-A-Fella }
The most important Hip-Hop record to come out in a long time, just because Kanye is getting away with a lot of shit on here that most commercial artists wouldn't have the chance (or personal desire) to do. Kanye is still dope on the boards, and even if he ain't the best rapper, he's funny and I like what he has to say and the fact that he has the sack to say it. He sounds more like a homeboy than a superstar, and I respect that. I can relate to that.

{ Amp Fiddler :: Waltz of a Ghetto Fly :: LP // Genuine }
Soulful (with a hint of old-school funk) coming out of Detroit. Amp got composition skills. Amp got instrument skills. Amp got pipes.

{ Chrome and Thunda Clap Riddims }
Fire. Fire. Fire.

{ Seiji (feat. Spoonface) :: Yin Yang :: mp3 }
Ripped from Gilles Peterson's show a few weeks ago. Seiji is on some other shit. Ragga+latin broken beat. Sick. Seiji's killin' it right now.

{ D Double E :: Lord of the Decks: The Fellowship of the Mic - Volume One :: mix CD }
More grime. Love the grime. Classic compilation of grimey tracks out of the UK. Dark and dirty.

{ Deyampert :: Shapes and Colors :: CD :: Sonar Kollektiv }
Diverse and beautiful record of soul, broken beat, house and introspective brilliance coming out of Cleveland. A very complete and fulfilling record.

{ Freedom Soundz :: Do It Right :: 12" // People }
Favorite broken beat tune of the moment. This song just makes me feel good, and gets my neck and my feet movin'. Alex Attias is an ill bastard.

{ Neon Phusion :: The Future Ain't the Same As It Userd 2B :: mp3 }
with IG Culture's help on production. IG is a genius, and this track is incredibly beautiful and moving. If I ever get any income again, the 12" is as good as mine.

(Wasnt exactly what I expected, but I was impressed and cd is in the changer. Has a lot of features if you like that, his verses are cold, as usual, production is very good, Mobetta Grooves did their thing as usual...)

Wild Life Entertainment - Mix Show Vol. 1 (Who would have thought, Magnificent of the Swisha House now has his own label, WILD LIFE ENT. this mix CD is really cold. DJ BULL is behind the mixing, it has 8-9 flows from Magnificent and his two brothers Deetha and Young Slugga...plus a blend of all the popular songs today...)

OG Ron C - Fuck Action 37.5
(Hosted by Chamillionaire and Rasaq, this R&B Slow Jam CD is off the chain. Ron C is the coldest turntablist in the south right now, so you know the mixing is already raw. It has a few flows by Chamillionaire and Rasaq, which you know they broke. If your into R&B pick it up, I have the Cham flows on repeat, im not really into R&B, but if your a CCC Fan, this is the one to get...)

Color Changing Click - Superbowl 2k3
(Pretty much all flows, wrecked, from the Wreckin' Yard to the CCC, all the songs are raw, the cd is avaliable for download at chamillionaire.com - for FREE! take a listen, then go pick up Ron C's S&C version!)

Young Ro - Undergrind
(Featuring Flip, Chamillionaire, 50/50 and the Nobodies, Young Ro done it again. If you looking for deep tracks, off that balling bit, the more lyrical Z-Ro type flow, pick this up boy seriously speaks the real..)

1) I forgot the cat's name but me I've been really feeling The Purple Album that mixes up Prince samples w/ The Black album. For example " Change Clothes" uses the main chord from " Purple Rain" which makes it feel so much more serious. You can find it at www.thepurplealbum.com or wwww.purplealbum.com

2) Roni Size Repreazent- In The Mode- A weekly staple because the drum and bass king just kills it on this album. Espcially on " Ghetto Celebrity" with Method Man. Waaaay ahead of it's time.

3) Notorius B.I.G._ Ready To Die- an almost daily staple for reasons I don't even have to get into.

4) Led Zeppelin-In Through The Out Door- the most slept on album from the great rock band of all time. Serious shit on this one.

5) Quincy Jones- Roots soundtrack...inspiring? Yes. Symphonic ? Of course. But the main reaon I've been digging it this week is I've been sampiling the shit out of certain parts...

1- Prince (Purple Rain)- no explanation necessary!

2- Rolling Stones- (Exile On Main Street) My boss bought mea copy and suggested I listene dto it to broaden my musical horizons. This is good shit!

3- Nas (Illmatic)- Verrrrrrrrrrrry few rap albums have come close to this. Everything he speaks of is still relevant 10 years later and his skills are timeless.

4- Mobb Deep (The Infamous Mobb Deep)- Thugged Out music at its best

5- Mase (Double Up)- Very slept on album.
