David Banner Recording Artist/Producer Crooked Lettaz Jackson MS
What are bringing to the rap game with your release? I work hard. Rap is the only game in the world, when you go to the pros, that the people stop working as hard as they did beforehand. If you look at it, rappers work as hard as they possibly can then get to the major leagues and stop working hard and get caught up in the game. In football, when you go from high school to college, it’s harder. Then you go to college to the NFL, it’s harder. The same with basketball, that’s how I look at the rap game. I’m pushing my ass to work hard to be good to my fans and make sure that every record is better than the last one. I’m bringing soul back to the game.
How has running your own company prepared you for what you are going through today? It just shows that nobody really cares. No one has your best interest at hand. You have to know your own business. You have to know about your publishing. You have to know about your licenses, different things like that. You have to know where your money is going to and where it’s being spent. You have to know about law, you have to know about business and the whole nine. Everyone loves a dumb, talented artist.
By your own standards, what would you consider to be successful for your project? Pushing units, it’s about money! I have a movement, but if a lot of people don’t have my record, then my movement doesn’t matter. It’s numerically connected with the amount of records that I sell. That’s what it is about, we in the business.
Is hip hop music and the whole climate better, worse, or the same as ten years ago? It’s better and it’s worse. They are slowly trying to turn rap into the WWE. It ain’t a game, it’s a lifestyle, it’s a culture. People are taking it and using it as a marketing tool and doing things to just solely sell records. It’s like a double-edged sword.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I probably won’t be here.
