My city's gone, thousands have no home and people still want to have Mardi Gras. I know this hardly applies to my Crusade family, but perhaps ya'll have friends, relatives, others who are just dying to come to this mess. Please tell them for me to stay home. They will have no where to stay, no food to eat, and most importantly no fricking fun because it is a travesty to have fun at others expense.

BFW,
First of all my thoughts and prayers are wth you and all of the people that have to live with this situation that will loom over your heads for years to come. I would say our heads but fuck that I can't even imagine what ya'll are going through down there.
I do think that now is not the time to be flashing titties for beads when people are fighting to keep land that has been in their famlies for generations. I heard from a neighboor who goes down there to do constuction that you can still see bodies in the street in some places and that the clean-up effort is NOWHERE near what we would like to beleive.
I don't knwo about ya'llbut as much as Ilove to drink I could not imagine dancing amongst the sorrow of our own people.
There might be some parts that are functional in the French Quarter but truth be told on a selfish note, I'd rather post up and wait for Spring Break in Cabo. That shit will be off the hook...and you won't have to worry about the locals despsing your ass because you get to go back home.

EXACTLY THAT'S WHAT I BEEN SAYING THE WHOLE TIME.
I FIND IT EXTREMELY DISRESPECTFUL THAT THE CITY OF N.O STILL WANTS TO HOLD DOWN MARDO GRAS WITHIN MILES OF WHERE THOUSANDS OF OUR PEOPLE LOST THERE LIVES LESS THEN 6 MONTHS AGO.
THAT IS A DISGRACE.
I DONT WANNA HEAR SHIT ABOUT HOW "IT WILL BE A GOOD BOOST FOR N.O ECONOMY" FUCK THAT. HAVE SOME DECENCY FIRST. BOOST THAT SHIT 1ST. THE PARTY. THAT'S JUST CRESSIE

i have to disagree w/ you big fine woman...i'm from n.o. too and my family lost everything as well...several of my church members lost their lives in the storm...but i also know that the only thing that's been keeping that city afloat for the past several years are tourism dollars....as sad and inappropiate as it may seem to push forth w/ mardi gras, that city will never bounce back until ppl start visiting again....tourists heading down there will prompt businesses to open, thus providing employment for the ppl that are still there...those hotels that are open are giving jobs to ppl that are no longer getting help from FEMA or the government....if not now, then when? point blank, the city's not going to rebuild w/o money and the government's not doing shit to help those ppl out!
so that said, i encourage ppl to go, spend money and help my city get back on its feet...however, if you haven't gotten your ticket yet, you're shit out of luck...i tried to cop one to go back home and it was $800 PLUS roundtrip between nyc and n.o.!

I ama native of the N.O. And my grandparents lost everything. they are now living with me in las vegas. They are visiting at this time in the N.O. and they plan on going to try to regain something of what they feel they have lost . I support them but I also feel like the city that supports mardi gras is not supporting the residents who used participate and attend mardi gras..

ok, everyone that's against mardi gras, exactly how and with what do you think the city's going to rebuild? do you really believe the government's going to step in and help? in a perfect world, maybe....how do you propose that the ppl that remain the city will generate income?

Dread,
That's a good question and one I think we fianlly need to answer. I think that during this time our so-called " black leaders" really need to stand up and actually make a change for a change.
These cats have been riding that " I marched with Martin shit" for decades now and now it's their turn to put the squeeze on the government to do the right thing.
I mean if our folks don't care why should teh fucking upper teir government care? Sharpton should be down there every fucking day causing a scene about what's going on. But I guess he might not be able to find a working electrical outlet for his hot comb.
But see the truth is we have no real black leadership and that is the problem. That's right I said it. Somebody needs to and its a fucking shame when you have rappers and entertainers doing more on a daily basis than the people who supposedly are the poltical face of our people.
I know blacks were not the only ones affected by this but the truth is as it pertains to New Orleans we did bear the worse of it and so its up to us to put the pressure on to get shit done.
Jesse Jackson is talking that bullshit of a marchin April but all he's gonna do is walk a few miles, do his photo opps and go back to throw out backs on the side. Where is Obama? Collin Powell? Condelleazza ( sp whatever I'm not looking that shit up)
I don't think Mardi Gras is the answer and I can see where th bread could " help" but really how much of that tourism money is going to the hood?

well, those ppl that are working at the casinos, hotels, restaurants, even down to the folks who build the floats are more than likely folks right out of the ghetto who will be taking home paychecks that in turn can feed their family and help them rebuild their lives.....the cab drivers that are shuttling ppl from the airport to the french quarter are benefitting from the tips and fares they collect.....
i'm not saying mardi gras is going to solve all the problems in the city....but believe, it's helping...i have family down there who are tired of being sad and frustrated everyday...they are looking forward to seeing the tourists just so that the city could feel like it used to....just so things can feel normal again....i was against the idea of mardi gras myself until i talked to a cousin who is still down in new orleans working 2 restaurant jobs to make ends meet simply because there isn't enough business down there for him to survive....FEMA and insurance $$ ran out over a month ago, all spent on gutting out his house that he had just purchased a month before the storm hit.....
i think to say no to mardi gras is to deny hardworking ppl like my cousin a means to survive...

Well put Dreaded. All of your points.
As much as folks would like to say, "ya'll should do _____ first," folks are downplaying the fact that it takes money. Obviously the residents don't have money. The city gov. pre-Katrina was in financial disarray, post-Katrina its pretty darn close to bankrupt. The money might not go straight to the hood, but it wasn't going straight to the hood anyway. Instead, it's going to businesses, governments, etc. who will have a little more money to keep their doors open a little longer which means the person who works there that stays in the hood can keep getting a paycheck a little longer.
And as for the "black leaders" . . . ya'll already know my stance on this. There's no such thing.
